Hitching is tolerated in Fiji, and in many rural areas, is virtually the only way you can travel besides walking, as there are few if any buses. It is however, culturally frowned upon for locals to do it, even though many can afford to take a bus. For foreigners, it is generally fairly easy to get a ride, and I suppose it’s still enough of a novelty not to upset the authorities. Fortunately, visiting hitchhikers have not yet overwhelmed Fiji, but if they ever became a nuisance, be assured that the government would pass a law banning hitchhiking.
