Fiji is an unsung cycling paradise. Roads are not too busy and traffic naturally slows down for a cyclist, perhaps because cycling is still a novelty. The biggest hazards are the untruly, smoke- belching buses which don’t slow down on unsealed roads and cover cyclists with a layer of dirt. Another danger is dehydration. The heart in Fiji is a factor you can’t ignore so be prepared to consume gallons of water. Locals are generally very happy to provide nourishment to thirsty cyclists along the road. Be sure to travel light, and bring a mountain bike if you have one. You’ll need a sturdy two- wheeler to negotiate Fiji’s potholed, unsealed roads. Finally, you can always safely stash your bicycle as storage area at Nadi or Nausori airports for under F$1 per day.
