Before you can hike anywhere in Fiji, you must seek the permission of the landowning village if you are not hiking as part of a tour, who will do so on the your behalf. Local villages or resort staff can arrange permission and a local guide. Viti Levu and Taveuni offer the best hikes. Kadavu may be more isolated but is no less beautiful.
Colo-I-Suva Forest Park on Viti Levu and the Lavena Coastal Walk and Tavoro Falls on Taveuni have marked trails and don’t require guides. However, some recent incidents involving female tourists have made Colo-I-Suva an unsafe place to go alone. The Vidawa Forest Walk on Taveuni is a full-day guided tour. Other good places for hiking are Mt Tomanivi on Viti Levu near Nadarivatu, and Koroyanitu National Heritage Park and Mt Koroyanitu near Lautoka. The Sigatoka Sand Dunes National Park on Viti Levu also deserves a mention. The Rucksack Club in Suva also organizes regular walks and excursions.
