DivingDiving | Fiji Island Vacation

Diving | Fiji IslandsFiji consistently ranks in the top 10 dive destinations in the world, and deservingly so. As the Soft Coral Capital of the World,” with its amazing hard and soft corals, wall dives, caves, grottos, shipwrecks and the sheer diversity of marine life, Fiji offers something for divers at every level.

Dive operators are spread throughout the country and choosing one depends largely on your individual needs. There is a variety of diving opportunities for all levels and budgets as well as for those wanting to learn scuba diving. Many dive operators have multilingual staff, making if possible for Japanese, Korean and European divers to take a scuba diving course in their native language. Dive requirements are a valid scuba certificate and your dive logbook. Most dive operators have tanks and weights, and many also offer a range of snorkeling and scuba equipment for hire.

Fiji Dive Locations

The Fiji Group has been divided into three dive regions due to the wide area covered by the scattering of the 300 plus islands that make up the group.

NORTH

The Northern region is renowned for soft coral diving, with the best place being in the strong currents of the Somosomo straits between Vanua Levu and Taveuni. It is easiest to access from the Garden Island Resort on Taveuni, Qamea and Matagi Islands also have access to the Somosomo area as well as dive sites on their own reefs. On Vanua Levu, the best diving can be found near the Kontiki Resort in Savusavu. This area has less soft coral but a better variety of hard corals.

WEST

The West, which is the closest to Nadi International Airport, is best suited for safe diving and dive training.  Beachcomber Island has a marine reserve status and is the perfect spot for backpackers. Other islands are slightly more upmarket, while Mana Island is for the truly adventurous.

CENTRAL

All diving in the central region is on the outer barrier reef wall with the very best diving just off shore around Beqa Lagoon, which is accessed from Pacific Harbour.  The reefs around Yanuca Island, which sits on the outer edge of Beqa Lagoon, boasts some of the best soft corals south of the Somosomo straits.  Marlin Bay Resort on Beqa Island is the place to head to for the best variety of diving in Beqa Lagoon.  Further south is Kadavu Island, renowned for the Great Astrolabe Reef and the range of diving including pelagic activity, sharks, soft corals, walls and caves, swarms of fish and warm clear waters.
