Colo-i-Suva, Kadavu, Taveuni, Waidroka Bay
There are some 80 species of terrestrial and freshwater bids, of which about 10 have been introduced to the islands. Birdwatchers should visit the following three island: Vitilevu (which has 56 of the known 81 known species), Kadavu and the Garden Island of Taveuni.
Birds found in Fiji
Reef Heron (Egretta sacra)
The largest bird found in Fiji, the reef heron thrives on small fish and the other marine animals. They can be found on the coasts but also the interiors of the larger islands.
Hawks: Swamp Harrier, (Circus approximans) & Fiji Goshawk, (Accipter rufitoques)
These are three species of hawk in Fiji with the most common being the Swamp Harrier, (Circus approximans). The swamp harrier can be found over swamps, grasslands and wooded terrain. It thrives on rodents, birds and occasionally snakes where as the Fiji Goshawk, (Accipter rufitoques), can be found from coastal to inland terrain and feeds on lizaeds, insects, and other birds.
Barn Owl (Tyoto alba)
Barn owls are usually sighted in the evenings and at night and prey generally on rodents an occasionally on other birds and bats.
Peregrine falcons (Falcus peregrinus)
Although Peregrine falcons exist in Fiji, they are not easily sighted.
Spotted Turtle Dove (Streptopelia chinensis), Orange dive (Ptiliponus victor).
Several varieties of dove exist in Fiji with the most common being the introduced Spotted turtle dove (Streptopelia chinensis),. Of special interest to birdwatchers is the Orange dove (Ptiliponus victor) found in Vanua Levu, Taveuni and some of the other offshore islands. The male is a bright orange with an olive green head.
Peale’s pigeon (Ducula latrans)
The call of Peale’s pigeon (Ducula latrans) has been likened to that of a barking dog, and can be confusing when heard in remote rainforest.
Musk Parrots (Prosopeia personata and Prosopeia tabuensis)
The yellow and red- breasted musk parrots (Prosopeia personata and Prosopeia tabuensis) are named after their distinctive musky odor and are usually found on the larger islands.
White- collared kingfisher (Halcyon chloris)
The white- collared kingfisher (Halcyon chloris) is a striking blue and features a distinctive white collar that wraps around the neck.
Silktail, (Lamprolia victoriae)
An increasingly rare bird found on Taveuni, the Silktail (Lamprolia victoriae) is a deep black with metallic blue spangling on the head and breast.
Viti Levu, Taveuni and Kadavu are the best destinations for birdwatching in Fiji. Different birds are found on the different islands, as listed below:
